6 Tips for a Healthy Smile Until Your Dentist Opens

Besides brushing and flossing, the American Dental Association recommends everyone sees their dentist at least twice a year for a cleaning and checkup. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to schedule your routine appointments because of the current COVID-19 restrictions. Don’t worry, here are 6 tips to keep your smile healthy until you can get into your dental office for your next cleaning and checkup.

1. Use the right brushing technique.

Your toothbrush is your first line of defense against preventable oral health issues, like tooth decay and gum disease. Sadly, if you aren’t using the right techniques, your brushing routine may not be effective. To ensure harmful plaque is thoroughly removed, use a soft-bristled toothbrush that accommodates the size of your mouth. Hold it at a 45-degree angle to the gum line and use a circular motion to clean all surfaces of your teeth.

2. Brush at least twice a day.

The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes each session. Even after a long day, take the time to brush your teeth to ensure harmful bacteria isn’t wreaking havoc on your smile overnight.

3. Floss every night before bed.

Your toothbrush can’t reach everywhere in your mouth, like between your teeth. Flossing is the only way to remove plaque that can lead to gum disease. It’s best to carefully clean between each tooth every night before going to bed.

4. Don’t forget to clean your tongue.

Your tongue traps odor-causing bacteria and food particles. You can remove the buildup using your toothbrush during your morning and nightly oral hygiene routine.

5. Eat a balanced diet.

A healthy diet is important for more than just your waistline. It also contributes to a healthy smile. It’s best to eat a balanced diet that’s limited in sugars and starches. If you can’t ignore your sweet tooth, be sure to brush your teeth well afterward.

6. Don’t use your teeth as tools.

We’re all guilty of using our teeth as tools to tear open a package. Although your teeth are handy when you can’t find scissors, this can cause a chipped or broken tooth. You can prevent your risk of a dental emergency by using the right tool for the job.

Protect Your Smile

You can ensure your smile stays healthy until you can see your dentist again by staying proactive about your dental health while you’re at home. When it’s time for your appointment, your dentist will keep your wellness a top priority.
